Dear Collectors

Welcome to the May/June edition of the Stamp Bulletin. The Philatelic team is very excited about the upcoming stamp issue program with the release of several special issues.

One of my favourite issues is Great Australian Railway Journeys. Due to be released on 7 May, it features some of Australia’s great trains. A few years ago I was fortunate to live in Tasmania which gave me the opportunity to ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway (between Queenstown and Strahan). I definitely recommend this journey.

Australia is blessed with a range of incredible natural wonders and we celebrate a number of these in May with the Australian World Heritage Sites issue. Each stamp features a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and the first day of issue postmark is especially clever.

The Working Dogs issue from 2008 was particularly popular with both collectors and the public and in June, we have a special issue titled Adopted and Adored which features five special pooches. This issue seeks to raise awareness of responsible dog ownership and encourages prospective owners to consider adopting a dog from one of the many organisations seeking to re-home lost or abandoned dogs. Each of the dogs in this issue has been adopted and is now adored.

The year 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the “Kangaroo and Map”, the Australian Commonwealth’s first stamp. To commemorate this significant milestone we will be issuing a stamp series celebrating our Colonial Stamp Heritage each year until 2013. The first of these is featured on page five. Plans are also underway for a major international stamp show to be held in Australia in May 2013 as part of this commemoration. To support this show Australia Post has produced a special limited-edition of the miniature sheet for this issue (10,000 copies). Proceeds from the sale of this special miniature sheet will be presented to the show organising committee.

The most anticipated international stamp show for 2010 is to be held in London and that runs from 8 to 15 May. As it is the only international show that Australia Post will be attending this year, we have produced a special range of overprinted miniature sheets that will be a great souvenir of the show. We hope all our international collectors who may be attending the show will come and say hello!

Until next time,

Noel Leahy
