Overview
The external territory of Norfolk Island incorporates the main island and two small uninhabited islands: Phillip Island and Nepean Island. Phillip Island, which was named in 1788 for Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, lies six kilometres south of Norfolk Island, is volcanic in origin and has an area of 190 hectares. It is included in Norfolk Island National Park.
From the 1790s, introduced animals caused significant erosion to the fragile vegetation and soil structure of Phillip Island. Rabbits were successfully eradicated in 1988 and the island is now free of feral animals. Regeneration programs are now rehabilitating and protecting Phillip Island, which is an important breeding site for seabirds and home to rare flora and fauna, including endemic plants, two reptile species and the Phillip Island centipede.
