Sustainable gardening is the theme of this year’s Stamp Collecting Month (SCM). That means creating and looking after gardens in ways that benefit human health and the health of the environment.

SCM runs through the whole of August and there’s something to appeal to people of all ages:

For stamp collectors

SCM is a great opportunity for stamp collectors to share their love of stamps and collecting with friends and family, especially children and grandchildren.

The “In the Garden” stamp issue will be released on 1 August 2019 for SCM. Illustrator Andrew Hopgood has brought to life a thriving and inviting garden space, including five bright and colourful stamp designs that focus on important sustainable aspects of the garden, especially activities that families can enjoy together. The stamps feature a rainwater garden, a nest box, a worm farm, and pollinators, which are vital to ensuring plant growth and reproduction.

Released with the stamp issue is a range of appealing products, including two medallion covers (one with a set of three garden-themed medallions) and a prestige booklet that describes in more detail how we can easily incorporate sustainable gardening practices at home and in the community.

For students and parents

The SCM 2019 website is a fantastic resource! It delves into sustainable gardening in a fun and informative way. There’s an animated video that brings our sustainable garden scene to life, including some of the interesting plant and animal species within it. You can learn a bit more about stamp collecting too – a hobby enjoyed by people of all ages, around the world!

For teachers

One of the key purposes of SCM is to bring an interesting and relevant educational topic to life through stamps. To make this easier, we’ve developed the SCM website, which contains engaging information, a fun video and curriculum-linked lesson plans developed in conjunction with subject-matter experts. Sustainable gardening touches on some key themes, including kitchen gardening, plant and animal life cycles, biodiversity, being water-wise and more.
